In this post, we’ll be addressing some common myths around teeth whitening to shed some light on how it works, what it does, and why you may want it.

Five common teeth whitening myths

If you want to whiten your teeth, you may be addressing a discolored, misshapen, or less-than-desirable smile. Rest assured that you’re not alone. Many people want to improve their appearance, and the best place to start is with their smile.

Myth #1: Whitening toothpastes work

Fact: In most cases, whitening products need more than a few minutes to actively whiten teeth. Most people brush their smile in a matter of minutes. So the whitening toothpaste that promises a whiter smile only after a few uses may not necessarily share that you need to spend more than two or three minutes brushing your teeth. If you want to take advantage of whitening toothpaste, spend more time brushing your teeth.

Myth #2: Coconut oil whitens teeth

Fact: Did you know in 2015 more than $225 million in sales were reported for coconut oil surrounding its alleged holistic healing properties? We’re not here to debunk the effectiveness of coconut oil for your skin or otherwise. We simply want to share that at the time of this post, there is no scientific evidence showing that “oil pulling” or “swishing” coconut oil will help whiten your teeth.

Myth #3: Strawberries and lemons whiten teeth

Fact: In the short term, lemons and strawberries may whiten your smile; however, over the long term, the acid in this delicious fruits will eat away at your enamel, causing more issues later.

Myth #4: Hydrogen peroxide or baking soda whitens teeth

Neither of these products show evidence of helping whiten a smile. The use of hydrogen peroxide can cause negative oral side effects like damaging oral tissue. In most cases, baking soda can disturb the bad and good bacteria in your mouth, causing oral health issues. It’s best to discuss your teeth whitening goals with your Boulder dentist, first.

Myth #5: Teeth whitening is permanent

As much as we would like to tell you the answer is yes, it’s not. Teeth whitening is a cosmetic treatment to whiten your smile, and as you eat, drink, and live your life, foods, liquids, and more will affect the health and color of your teeth. The best approach is to discuss the brightness of your smile and your lifestyle with your Boulder dentist.
