Dental Tips For Kids

Now that school is officially back in session, it’s time to make sure that your kiddos have the healthiest smile possible. Start your school year off on the right foot and bring your children into Boulder Dental Designs. The tips and tricks below will guarantee that they have a smile that they’re proud to show off! First things first, let’s talk about prevention!

Sealants

Dental sealants are always a great preventative dental care route to take. They “protect the depressions and grooves of your teeth from food particles and plaque that brushing and flossing can’t reach”. The best part about this procedure is that it’s quick and easy! All that happens is a “tooth-colored acrylic “coating” is painted onto the surface of the tooth”. This coating then acts as a barrier and protects your child’s teeth from plaque and acids. Dental sealants are especially great for kids because they fill into the deep grooves that children can sometimes struggle to reach when brushing. This can prevent cavities and potential other dental problems down the road.

Fluoride Treatment

Your teeth don’t have muscles but we can help make them strong! Fluoride is a natural mineral that builds strong teeth and prevents cavities. This treatment does a great job of supporting healthy tooth enamel and fighting bacteria that harm teeth and gums, which is important for any child! Fluoride treatments only take a few minutes, and they have a significant, long-lasting impact on your child’s oral health. Research has shown “the earlier your child is exposed to fluoride the less likely they are to develop cavities”

Regular Check-Ups

Just like you go to the doctor for a physical check-up, your teeth need to go to! Regular dental exams and check-ups are an excellent opportunity to evaluate what your child is currently doing for their oral hygiene, as well as provide suggestions for future care. Looking at the long term, these regular visits inevitably lead to fewer cavities, which is ultimately what every child and parent wants. Dental exams should generally take place every six months and starting your children with this routine when they are young is a great way to help them form the habit for a lifetime of healthy checkups to come!
