The Rise of Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry, or the art of creating a better-looking smile, has certainly come a long way in the last 100 years.

A century ago, dentists were still experimenting with every material known to man in an effort to find a suitable substance for veneers, crowns, bridges, and dentures. There was a time that dentists were trying to use teeth from a cadaver to install into the mouth. This was known to work for an extremely short time, however, they were never a long-term solution to tooth loss. Additionally, many materials were used as crowns and veneers but to no avail.

About 50 years ago, cosmetic dentistry began making huge advances and as the abilities of dentists grew and the success of dental procedures spread, they became extremely popular. Nowadays, cosmetic dentistry is one of the most popular forms of dental work and people all over the world are getting beautiful, bright, white teeth because of it. We’ve come along with veneers, bridges, dentures, teeth whitening, and so many other cosmetic procedures.

In today’s blog, the final installment of our three-part series, we’re going to take a look at some of the most common cosmetic dental procedures that are around today. Continue reading below to learn more!

Forms of Cosmetic Dentistry

Teeth Whitening – As one of our most common cosmetic procedures here at Boulder Dental Designs, whitening has significantly grown in popularity in the last three decades. And with the updating of whitening technology, we’re able to achieve in one visit what used to take many. Who doesn’t love a brighter and whiter smile? If you’re interested in getting your teeth whitened at our Boulder dental office, contact us today!

Veneers – Traditionally made of ceramic or porcelain, veneers are flat, tooth-looking composites that are attached to the front of the tooth. People opt to have veneers attached to the teeth when one or more are discolored, misshapen, or are simply needing a cosmetic improvement. If you’d like to get veneers on one or all of your teeth, why not give us a call? Your Boulder dentist can give you the smile that you’ve always dreamed of.

Crowns – Dental crowns are much like veneers, however, crowns are basically shells that encapsulate the whole tooth and veneers only cover the front of the tooth. A crown is bonded to the tooth and though they are known to last at least ten years, crowns are far from permanent. If it’s been a while since you had your crowns put on, or you’d like to get crowns for the first time, it’s time to make sure that they’re still holding up. Give us a call to schedule an appointment today!

Dental Bonding – Similar to crowns and veneers, bonding involves a tooth-like composite that your Boulder dentist can form into the desired shape before the material is cured under the right kind of light. Bonding is useful for chipped, cracked teeth, teeth with massive deterioration, or anything else that might require a “homemade” tooth. Bonding allows for a tooth that is realistic, matching with the rest of your pearly whites.

Dental Implants – Implants are a form of dentistry that has been experimented with for centuries. Those of us who are native to this time are fortunate enough to benefit from thousands of years of effort. Dental implants are an amazing option for someone who has lost a tooth and is needing a replacement. With a metal anchor, the replacement tooth or implant is screwed into the gums and stays put quite well. If you’re tired of the gap that’s been left in your teeth from your last extraction, it’s time to call us at Boulder Dental Designs.

Though there are so many other cosmetic dental procedure to discuss, we feel like we may be here forever if we go into detail for each one. We should, however, give an honorable mention to dental bridges, dentures, orthodontics and any other form of dental work that allows a person to have a smile that they’ve always wanted.

There are many reasons to go to your amazing dentist in Boulder, and even though we’ve had three blogs in which to discuss many of the most popular dental procedures, there are so many other possibilities out there when it comes to dental work.
