What to Expect When Getting a Routine Teeth Cleaning in Boulder, CO

Brushing and flossing every day doesn’t mean you don’t need professional teeth cleaning. Clean teeth have a major effect on your overall health. Gum disease has been proven to cause heart disease. That is why it is important, if not essential, that you come in for a cleaning and checkup twice a year. But, what can you expect when getting a routine teeth cleaning in Boulder, CO?

First, it is important to know that professional teeth cleaning by our wonderful hygienists here at Boulder Dental Designs, will take about 30 to 60 minutes. We understand that there are many fears and anxieties about going to the dentist. Our hygienists are gentle and will make sure you are comfortable throughout your cleaning.

Examination

The first step is that your hygienist will give you an oral examination. Using a small mirror, they will look for oral problems such as plaque, tartar build-up, inflamed gums, and any dark marks on your teeth. This allows the hygienist to learn what to focus on during your cleaning. If there are any more serious issues, such as cavities or gum disease, they may have the dentist do a more thorough exam.

Scaling (Removal of Plaque & Tartar)

A little tool called a dental scraper is used to scrape off any plaque or tartar from the surface of your teeth, by the gum line, and in between your teeth. While this is not a painful process, many patients find it unpleasant due to the scraping sound from the metal scraping on their teeth. Here at Boulder Dental Designs, we offer noise-canceling headphones and Netflix to help distract you from the sound.

Cleaning, Polishing, and Flossing

After your hygienist finishes scaling, they will use a high-powered electric toothbrush that has a rubber prophy cup to remove any stains and polishes your teeth. The toothpaste they use is called prophylaxis paste which has a gritty texture because of the cleansing particles that help clean your teeth. The hygienist will then floss your teeth to help remove any remaining plaque.

Rinsing & Fluoride

Once your teeth have been cleaned, you will then rinse your mouth out to remove anything that might be left in your mouth. After rinsing, you may be recommended to have a fluoride treatment. You will pick the flavor of fluoride gel. The gel is then placed in a mouth tray and placed in your mouth for about a minute. After your fluoride treatment, you will then wait for the dentist to come in and do the dental examination.

Now that you know what to expect during your teeth cleaning appointment, you can go ahead and schedule a cleaning! Here at Boulder Dental Designs, we understand that you may have apprehensions about visiting the dentist. That is why we treat our patients with gentle care.
